The British Academy of Sport (BAS) and the Embassy of the Hellenic Republic organized the first International Women’s Volleyball Tournament in Kuwait, the OLYMPIA Cup, on Feb 12 at the BSK Campus in Salwa.

10 teams of ladies representing the countries of Australia, France, Great Britain, Kuwait, Palestine, Philippines, Romania, Serbia, Tunisia, and the USA battled it out for the prestigious trophy.

It was an amazing day with very strong teams and good matches. The semifinals were played by Kuwait with Philippines and Tunisia with Great Britain. The winners of OLYMPIA Cup were the team from Tunisia after winning 4 matches.

Most of the ambassadors of these countries attended the tournament and supported the ladies, some of whom were embassy staff.  A large group of partisan supporters from the various communities came to support their teams and a wonderful atmosphere of friendly rivalry made the event a unique occasion for sport in Kuwait.

Madame Vera Al Mutawa MBE, HE the Greek Ambassador to Kuwait Dr Theodoros Theodorou, Sadiq Al Mutawa, Ms. Balsam Al Alyoub and The Director of British Academy of Sport, Lucian Anisia presented the prizes on the stage and the Olympia Cup to the Tunisian team the winners.

The event was sponsored by: Sports Direct, Pro Sports, High Sierra, Ezz Kout Estate Devolvement and D&D Pizza.

After this successful tournament BAS will organize the third International Men’s Volleyball Tournament on 25 March and registration is now open for the various countries to register their team.
