Asian Club League Handball Championship kicks off

Al-Kuwait play Al-Karkh Sports Club

KUWAIT CITY, March 19: Kuwait is hosting the 21st Asian Men’s Club League Handball Championship at the hall of Al-Kuwait Sports Club starting from Wednesday March 20 until Tuesday April 2, 2019, and the winner will qualify to represent Asia in the IHF World Men’s Handball Championship for 2019 (Super Globe).

Welcoming the participating clubs was the board chairperson of Al-Kuwait Sports Club and head of the higher organizing committee Khaled Al-Ghanim. He wished them a pleasant stay in what he called “their second home country, Kuwait” in a beautiful competition that forms tight bonds between countries in the Asian sub-continent to promote and develop the game of handball in the world.

Al-Ghanim affirmed confidence in the higher organizing committee and its subcommittees in facilitating the necessary items for the competition in a way that guarantees success and a remarkable time for the participating clubs and their fans. 13 clubs are participating in this year’s championship, and they are divided into four different groups of 3’s and 4’s.

In Group A, China’s Dragon Club will face hostilities with Mudhar Handball Club and Al-Sadaka Handball Club, while Group B will pitch Asian Handball powerhouse, Al-Jaish Handball Club, against Muscat Sports Club and Al-Wakrah Handball Club. Host of the tournament, Al-Kuwait Handball Club, will be at loggerheads with Al-Karkh Sports Club and Club India and Barbar Handball Club of Bahrain for glory in Group C, and Group D consists of Al-Duhail Sports Club, Al-Ahli Handball Club, Sharjah Sports Club and Kazma Handball Club.

The opening ceremony is due to start at 5:45 pm, and as previously mentioned, the tournament is meant for the top league Clubs in the Asian countries. Defending champions, Al-Najma will be absent from this year’s edition after losing out to fellow rival, Barbar Handball Club of Bahrain in the Bahraini league. This year’s event also showcases professional players joining the ranks of the local clubs that signed 26 contracts to enhance their lines. It is worth mentioning that the rules of the game allows four foreign players only in the field.
