CAIRO, June 6: The Arab Parliament expressed Monday its strong condemnation of, and rejection to, irresponsible remarks issued by spokeswoman of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against Prophet Mohammad. In a statement, the parliament affirmed that such remarks fully contradict the principle of tolerance, and interfaith dialogue, and lead to hate.

The parliament expressed its surprise that the remarks were issued by political officials at the party that should have been more keen on disseminating values of moderation, tolerance and interfaith dialogue, and confronting extremist ideas that fuel religious hate, according to the statement. It stressed the necessity of halting irresponsible remarks that insult symbols and sanctities of Islam, calling for holding the perpetrators accountable to ensure that such acts will not happen again.

It pointed out that there is a big difference between freedom of expression and respect for the beliefs of others. It is not possible, in any way, to accept insulting religions and their sacred symbols under the pretext of the freedom of expression, it elaborated. On Sunday, India’s media said that the BJP suspended memberships of Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal due to their remarks on a TV program against the Prophet.(KUNA)
