KUWAIT CITY, May 31: The Operations Room of the Fire Department received information that fire had engulfed a carpentry shop in Shuwaikh Industrial Area, and seven fire brigades were dispatched to the location.
Apparently, the fire started in the carpentry shop and spread to neighboring shops selling wood, tires and auto parts. Firefighters that first arrived at the scene requested backup to extinguish the inferno and they managed to prevent it from spreading any further.
Acting Director General of Fire Services Major General Khaled Rakan Al-Mekrad confirmed that firemen embarked on the ‘fire-out’ operation for 12 hours with the participation of seven fire stations until they were able to quench the blaze.
He explained that the fire spread rapidly from the carpentry shop due to the wind speed and devoured other shops covering an area of 2000 square/meters that sold tires, wood and auto parts. He disclosed that some firemen inhaled smoke and suffered breathing difficulty, and they were treated on site.
Deputy Director General of Fire Control Department Major General Jamal Al-Belaihees who finished his duty at 11:00 am noted that three fire brigades were still at the scene with high ranking officials conducting the necessary investigation to determine the cause of fire.
