Kuwait handball players celebrate with fans at the end of their match against Iraq.

MANAMA, Jan 22: Abdullah Al-Theyab, Assistant Secretary of the Kuwait Handball Association, announced the Kuwaiti national handball team’s readiness for upcoming matches in the Asian Handball Championship hosted by Bahrain, with the ultimate goal of securing the title. Al-Theyab highlighted the impressive performance and high level demonstrated by the Kuwaiti players, emphasizing the team’s status as one of the top four in Asia.

Reflecting on their 15-year hiatus from the World Cup, Al-Theyab noted the team’s determination to fight until the end and their successful qualification for the global tournament. Despite facing injuries, he expressed pride in the team’s ability to achieve their objectives and showcase the best of Kuwaiti handball on the Asian stage.

Al-Theyab extended congratulations to the leadership, government, and people of Kuwait for the team’s qualification for the World Cup in Croatia, Denmark, and Norway, scheduled for January 14, 2025. He expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to supporting the team in reaching this milestone. The upcoming challenge for Kuwait is the semi-final match against Qatar scheduled for Tuesday.

The Secretary General of the Handball Federation, Qayed Al-Adwani, extends heartfelt congratulations to the political leadership, including His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah , Prime Minister Dr. Sheikh Mohammed Al-Sabah, Minister of State for Youth Affairs Daoud Marafi, and the President of the Kuwaiti Olympic Committee Sheikh Fahd Al-Nasser, as well as the Kuwaiti people, for the outstanding achievement of our national handball team in qualifying for the 2025 World Cup finals.

Al-Adwani announces that, in recognition of this achievement, the Handball Federation’s Board of Directors has decided to grant a financial reward of one thousand Kuwaiti dinars to each player in the national team, along with the technical and administrative staff. He acknowledges that this gesture is a small token for the heroes who brought joy to the Kuwaiti people and reinstated Kuwait’s strong position in the handball arena, affirming the team’s status among the elite teams in the yellow continent.

Highlighting the significance of this achievement, Al-Adwani emphasizes that it comes after years of hard work and effort, despite challenges such as limited resources and weak government support.Kuwait secured qualification for the 2025 World Cup by defeating the Iraqi team 32-20. Kuwait is set to face Qatar in the semi-finals, with the aspiration to clinch a podium position in the tournament, as expressed by Talal Al-Otaibi, a member of Al-Ittihad.

Faisal Siwan, the Director of the National Teams at the Handball Federation, applauded the   players for bringing joy to the Kuwaiti people amidst other sports’ setbacks. Siwan praiseed the team’s  unmatched determination and high spirit throughout the matches.

Addressing the injury of star player Mohamed Al-Hendal, Siwan discloses that he sustained a finger injury, receiving treatment from a specialist doctor. Additionally, Al-Hendal has a knee injury, and further assessments will determine its nature.

Siwan emphasizes the equal chances of the four teams in the upcoming semi-finals, expressing gratitude to the Handball Federation’s Board of Directors for their unwavering financial and moral support, which has contributed to the development of a strong team, predominantly comprising young players capable of competing at the continental level.
