KUWAIT CITY, Nov 22: A new study has found that white bread may increase the risk of colorectal cancer, reports Al- Qabas daily According to ‘News Medical’ website, the data of 118,000 people included in the database ‘UK Bio Bank Data’ were analyzed. The researchers looked into the prevalence of cancer of the colon and rectum among the participants, and its relationship to the extent of their consumption of 139 types of foods and nutrients.
The team found that over the course of 12 years; 1,466 people were diagnosed with colorectal cancer. The average age of the patients is 55 years old and about 45 percent of them are male. The study, which was published in the Nutrients Journal, revealed that eight out of 139 foods and nutrients are associated with the risk of colorectal cancer. It then warned that increased consumption of white bread could also increase the risk of having the disease.
“If you have the disease, eating dietary fiber and calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese and healthy carbohydrates could lower the risk. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the world and it usually occurs in older people, but recent studies showed it is becoming prevalent among young people as well. Scientists believe that approximately 25 percent of all cancer cases around the world are linked to diet,” it added.
