Where there is a will, there is a way

THERE is an old proverb about willpower – Where there is a will, there is a way. This is what the government has proven after taking the constitutional oath, as it passed four laws that the people of Kuwait have been waiting for a long time.

Previously, the government used to blame the delay in passing the four deserving laws on the parliament. This led it to lose popular support, and the MPs exploited the situation to paint a bad image of the government to the people.

After taking the oath, the government revealed its power in imposing what it deems appropriate. It overcame a crisis that almost worsened the economic and political situation in the country. Therefore it is required to hear the voice of the people, or to put it more clearly, the government should practice populism through laws and decisions that stop the decline.

For instance, its approval to postpone the loan installments by six months. Although it is an important and big step and it meets the needs of people, it is only a painkiller that does not cure the disease.

In order to work on a serious treatment, it must consider a radical solution to the issue of loans, especially consumer loans, and debts from companies and banks, as the latter only need extension, and the government reassures the banks by guaranteeing them, especially the facilities for which there are no mortgages, and without the state guaranteeing any penny.

There are tens of thousands of individuals and companies who suffer from restrictions imposed by banks. In the event that the latter resort to the court to collect their debts in light of the complex economic situation, there is no doubt that those affected will declare bankruptcy, which leads to an economic collapse that no country can bear.

The government, in its failure to deal with this file, has contributed to it. This matter requires a corresponding step by the Central Bank of Kuwait to ease its strict restrictions and work flexibly to facilitate business in the country.

The failure to resolve the issue of loans is almost destroying the country. Therefore, irrespective of the reasons that led the executive authority to take these bold steps yesterday, the lesson remains, which is to correct the practice in a way that serves the people.

The government is the custodian of the country’s safety, and the social and economic protection. It is mandated to perform this task to the fullest, without casting the blame on the National Assembly as its members are looking for their electoral interests. Any concession or complacency from the government will push people to the MPs. We have seen how the MPs exploited this to charge the situation, which led to further economic deterioration.

Today we are not talking about deals made at night, but about a conviction that the government must generate through the people, which is that the one who governs is His Highness the Amir, His Highness the Crown Prince and the executive authority, and not a handful of MPs.

If the government returns to letting the MPs handle the affairs, the crisis would worsen even more, and the people would hold the government responsible.

This anomaly does not exist in any country where democracy is less established than Kuwait. Therefore, it is clear that the endeavor of some of these MPs is not only to overthrow the current government, but also to bring down the entire institution and the regime.

Therefore, the failure of the executive authority to fortify itself through populist laws, including addressing the issue of loans, will be the first step towards building a strong confrontation in the face of those who have proven in the past months that they are ready to burn down the country in order to light a cigarette.

So, will it remain as it is and give more opportunities to the MPs to bully them? All that it needs to do is to side with the people.
