‘Vaccines don’t protect against cancerous diseases except before exposure to virus’

KUWAIT CITY, April 10: Oncology consultant, Dr. Khaled Al-Saleh, said some cancerous diseases are associated with some viruses, and we need increased knowledge of the role of viruses that cause cancer, reports Al-Jarida daily. “We also need to develop vaccines, as we did with the human papillomavirus (HPV) to help prevent some types of human cancer,” said Al-Saleh said in a statement to the daily, commenting on experts’ assertion that a vaccine for the treatment of cancer and heart disease will be ready by 2030, and that these vaccines cannot protect against infection unless they are given before a person is exposed to the virus that stimulates genetic deviations, and thus the changes that occur. He added, it causes the cell to start dividing uncontrollably, causing cancer.

He added that viruses consist of a small number of genes surrounded by a protein envelope, and the virus can enter inside a living cell, and it can control the cell’s machinery in order to reproduce more viruses. He stated that some viruses do this by inserting their DNA into the host cell. He stressed that many studies have shown that there are viruses that are considered strong risk factors for some cancers, and that the strength of this relationship has proven that they can be considered a cause of these cancers, and the most important of these viruses are the human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes cervical cancer, and the Epstein-Barr virus (EPV) that causes gill cancers.
