Top MoH official gets 7 years in funds embezzlement

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 17: The Criminal Court sentenced an assistant undersecretary in charge of medicine affairs in Ministry of Health to seven-year imprisonment with hard labor, along with another employee in charge of storage in the ministry, and an employee of a pharmaceutical company, for charges of embezzlement of funds from the ministry.

The court also ordered them to repay KD 36,000, and imposed a fine of KD 72,000 on the assistant undersecretary for facilitating the crime.

It sentenced three defendants to three-year imprisonment and dismissal from public office. A fine of KD 3,000 was imposed on the third defendant who works for a pharmaceutical company.

Meanwhile, another defendant was acquitted of the charge of obtaining money illegally, and the fourth defendant – former undersecretary of the Ministry of Health Dr. Khaled Al-Sahlawi was acquitted of the charge of unintentional damage to state funds. The civil aspect of the case was referred to the civil court.
