The leader who shaped modern Qatar

When Sheikh Hamad became Amir in 1995, Qatar was entering a new chapter. During his years of leadership, the country grew rapidly and became increasingly recognised around the world. His vision was not only about building roads, towers and major projects. He believed in investing in people, particularly through education, healthcare and opportunities for future generations.

Under his leadership, Qatar became one of the world’s leading energy producers and developed a stronger presence internationally. The country became known for its diplomacy, global investments, education and growing cultural influence. Many of the institutions and achievements associated with Qatar today began or expanded during his time as Amir. One of the most memorable moments of his leadership came in 2013, when he handed over responsibility to his son, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The peaceful transition reflected his trust in the next generation and his belief that the future of the country should be placed in capable young hands. Even after stepping down, Sheikh Hamad remained a respected and much-loved figure.

To many Qataris, he was not only a former leader but also the father of modern Qatar. His influence could still be seen in the country’s continued growth and success. For us in Kuwait, Qatar is more than a neighbouring country. We share deep family ties, a common history and a strong Gulf identity. The loss of Sheikh Hamad is therefore felt across the region. We stand with the people of Qatar during this difficult time and share their sadness.

Sheikh Hamad will be remembered as a leader who believed in his country and worked to give it a respected place in the world. His legacy lives on through the nation he helped build and the generations who will continue his vision. May Allah have mercy on him, grant him the highest place in Paradise and give strength and patience to his family and the people of Qatar.
