The world and I will soon celebrate the 150th anniversary of your birth. Although we never met, you have been with me every day since 1956, when I first discovered you. For nearly 70 years, you have remained with me, especially during the hot summer months and the cold winter nights. I remember well your beginnings as a quiet, intelligent child. You used to say that your name would one day be immortalized, and we would either laugh or simply smile.

Nothing in your humble life, or in your family¡¯s life on a remote farm in New York State, hinted at such a future. You grew into a young man and became the most intelligent and handsome among us. I struggled with mathematics alongside you, but you mastered it while I did not. In 1901, you earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University, while I never fulfilled my father¡¯s dream of seeing me graduate from there. We were delighted when you joined the Buffalo Engineering Company in 1902. Your fortunes changed the day the company received a request from a New York City printing house. It needed help eliminating the excessive heat and humidity inside its press, as it was causing the paper to expand and contract unevenly during printing, resulting in blurry, poor-quality prints. Fortunately for all of us, the company entrusted you with solving the problem.

Your goal was never to invent something that would transform our lives, but simply to find a way to reduce the humidity inside the printing house. This led you to design a system that circulated air over cooled coils, condensed the excess moisture, and then reheated or adjusted the air to the desired temperature. The result not only cooled the air but also allowed precise control of humidity. It became the first modern air conditioning system to combine both functions.

In 1911, encouraged by our friend Jack, you published your famous Rational Psychrometric Formula, laying the scientific foundation for the entire air conditioning industry. I vividly remember your decision in 1915 to embark on a new adventure by founding a company with a capital of $ 32,600 to manufacture refrigeration equipment. That was the beginning of the air conditioning giant, the Carrier Engineering Company, which, two years later, installed Willis Carrier air conditioners in shopping malls in Detroit. People flocked to these malls in the summer, ushering in the era of modern air conditioning and a profound transformation in people¡¯s lives.

Thank you, my friend, for making life in Kuwait more comfortable through your ingenious invention, which has improved the quality of life and contributed to longer, healthier lives for many. When you passed away in 1950 at the age of 73, your fame had spread to every corner of the world, from the hottest regions to the coldest. You left behind an unforgettable legacy and a company that has grown into one of the world¡¯s largest air conditioning manufacturers, now valued at more than $73 billion. It is no surprise that TIME magazine named you one of the 100 most infl uential people of the 20th century. . . .
