KUWAIT CITY, June 16: Iran’s Ambassador to Kuwait, Mohammad Totonji, affirmed on Monday that the Islamic Republic does not seek to escalate the current conflict but will not hesitate to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity with a “firm and balanced response.” He also praised Kuwait's stance and diplomatic efforts regarding the recent Israeli attacks on Iranian territory.
Speaking at a press conference, Totonji denounced what he described as a direct and unlawful military aggression by Israel against Iran, calling it a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter and international law.
“The Israeli entity launched a military attack targeting residential neighborhoods, civilian and academic institutions, as well as nuclear sites operating under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),” the ambassador said. He noted that the assault resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians, including women and children, in addition to high-ranking military officials and renowned scientists.
Totonji warned that attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities posed significant risks to civilian populations and increased the likelihood of a radioactive disaster, describing such actions as a clear breach of international norms and a threat to the global nuclear non-proliferation regime.
He accused Israel of attempting to derail ongoing diplomatic efforts and widen regional tensions, stating that Iran’s response would remain within the bounds of international law. “Iran’s retaliation will be proportionate and legitimate under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which guarantees the right of self-defense,” he asserted.
When asked about the international community’s silence over the attacks, Totonji emphasized that condemnation is a moral, legal, and humanitarian obligation — particularly for Islamic nations and states that claim to champion global peace.
The ambassador reiterated Iran’s commitment to regional dialogue and the principles of good neighborliness, especially with Gulf Arab states. He expressed appreciation for Kuwait’s rejection of the aggression and its call for calm and peaceful resolutions.
Tehran and other Iranian cities have faced a wave of large-scale Israeli attacks since early Friday. Iran has since responded with its own missile strikes.
