Teenage killed, 2 children injured as explosive device goes off in E. Afghanistan

KABUL, June 15, (Xinhua): A teenage boy lost his life and two others sustained injuries as an unexploded device left over from past wars went off in eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, a news release of the provincial police office said Sunday. A teenage boy, along with his two siblings, found a toy-like device in Kama district and began playing, but the device exploded, killing the boy on the spot and injuring his younger brother and sister, the news release said.

Without providing further details, the news release urged people to avoid touching suspected objects and to inform the police if such objects were seen elsewhere in the province. An identical incident claimed the life of a child and injured four others in the neighboring Paktia province last week. The post-war Afghanistan reportedly is one of the mine-contaminated countries in the world as dozens of people, mostly children, are dead or maimed due to the unexploded ordnances left over from more than four decades of war each month.
