NEW YORK, May 17: US President Donald Trump launched a new attack on pop superstar Taylor Swift via Truth Social on Friday, suggesting that her popularity has declined and implying he may be responsible.
"Has anyone noticed that, since I said 'I hate Taylor Swift,' she's no longer 'HOT'?" the 78-year-old Republican wrote. The post was made while Trump was returning to the United States from a trip to the Middle East. The reason for the sudden remark remains unclear.
Trump has publicly criticized Swift multiple times, particularly since her endorsement of Joe Biden during the 2020 presidential election. In the 2024 campaign, Swift once again supported a Democratic candidate — this time endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris following the September presidential debate.
"I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election," Swift posted. "I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader, and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos."
Swift ended her post by signing it "childless cat lady" — a pointed jab at Vice President JD Vance, who had recently drawn criticism for disparaging single women with cats.
In response to Swift's endorsement, Trump declared "I hate Taylor Swift" on his Truth Social platform. His campaign spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, also dismissed Swift’s political stance, claiming the singer is out of touch with average Americans.
"Taylor Swift may make great music, but she does not understand the struggles of everyday, hardworking families," Leavitt said. "President Trump is speaking on behalf of those hardworking, struggling families who don't get the privilege, like Taylor Swift, of living in a gated community."
Leavitt further argued that Swift’s support for Harris reflects what she described as the Democratic Party’s alignment with the wealthy elite: "It's further evidence that the Democrat Party, unfortunately, is the party of the wealthy elite."
Swift, whose net worth Forbes estimates at $1.6 billion, is currently recognized as the richest female music artist in the world.
Her political disagreements with Trump go back years. In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, Swift said she supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election and opposed Trump’s presidency.
During the 2020 protests sparked by the killing of George Floyd, Swift harshly criticized Trump on Twitter (now X), writing: "After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence? ‘When the looting starts the shooting starts’??? We will vote you out in November."
Swift has also accused Trump of treating the presidency as an autocracy, further deepening their long-standing feud.
