Sri Lankan embassy hikes fees

KUWAIT CITY, April 1: The Sri Lankan Embassy has increased the fee for direct recruitment of domestic workers to KD 476 — a violation of the decision of the Ministry of Commerce which set the fee at KD 350, reports Al-Qabas daily. According to a circular issued by the embassy, the concerned person must be interviewed prior to approval of the employment contract.

Meanwhile, Bassam Al- Shammari, an expert on domestic labor affairs, told the daily that the cost of hiring a domestic worker from Ceylon through an agency is KD 500; in addition to insurance and travel costs.
