This is a remarkable achievement, given the immense challenges left by 51 years of terror and oppression. The Syrian people successfully overcame 14 years of the Ba’athist regime’s attempts to subjugate them, surviving the iron fist, barrel bombs, and prisons of torture and murder to reclaim their freedom. Ahmed Al-Sharaa emerged as the leader of a revolution that successfully overcame the Syrian army, security forces, and regional powers. In a swift and decisive victory, the Ba’athist regime and the Assad dictatorship were toppled in less than a week.
In the ensuing months, Al- Sharaa has proven his ability to guide the new Syria through major security and economic challenges. His leadership is widely regarded as wise, as he prioritizes the national interest and has ended Syria’s 41-year isolation by reintegrating the country into the Arab world. During that period of isolation, the essence of Arabism had been undermined by Iranian influence and terrorist groups, with various factions inflicting violence on Syrians throughout the civil war. By fulfilling his promises, Al-Sharaa has restored Syria’s international relations and focused from the start on empowering his people to reclaim their dignity and honor.
In response, the international community has begun supporting efforts to facilitate the country’s recovery and resurgence. The first measure undertaken was the removal of American and international sanctions that had been imposed on Syria for decades. These sanctions were originally enacted due to Syria’s history of supporting terrorism, serving as a hub for drug production, persecuting its citizens on fabricated charges, distorting religious doctrine, and engaging in sectarian violence.
Achieving this goal requires a joint Syrian-Lebanese force tasked with targeting and dismantling not only Syrian militias that have taken refuge in Lebanon but also Hezbollah operatives. Their aggressive actions, particularly the armed clashes in Beirut following recent celebrations by many Lebanese and Syrian residents, demand immediate intervention. Syria is currently demanding the extradition of these militias from Lebanon.
These groups have caused considerable harm to Gulf states, having robbed some of their citizens before fleeing first to Syria and subsequently to Lebanon. To ensure accountability for these internationally recognized atrocities, urgent cooperation among Arab security agencies is essential. This is particularly crucial for countries that have suffered from terrorism and for those whose leaders had supported it, such as the former Syrian regime. A thriving Syria carries immense potential, as evidenced by the success of projects launched by displaced Syrians in both Arab and foreign countries.
