KUWAIT CITY, Jan 31: The Ministry of Electricity and Water said Russia and Ukraine have stopped exporting timber to countries around the world, including Kuwait, for various reasons, reports Al-Jarida daily. The ministry uses these timber poles to supply power to remote border sites. However, sources said the ministry has sufficient stock of wooden poles but there is a tendency to use metal columns in those areas, after they have proven their efficiency. On the other hand, the ministry has obtained the approval of the Central Agency for Public Tenders to float a tender for a project to supply and install combined cycle gas turbine units to increase the electric power at the Subbiya station site by 900 megawatts. The authority set March 8 as the last date for submitting bids.

The sources pointed out that this is one of the important and urgent projects on which the ministry depends to increase its strategic stock of electricity to meet the annual increasing demand due to urban expansion in the country, explaining that the current production is about 18,600 megawatts.
