Road accidents claim 247 lives in 30 days in Nepal

KATHMANDU, Nov 5, (Xinhua): As many as 247 people, including 12 children, were killed in road accidents across Nepal in one month between mid-September to mid-October, Nepal Police said Wednesday.

The mishaps involving 3,947 vehicles also injured 4,884 people, of whom 848 were seriously hurt. Motorcycles accounted for the highest number of accidents at 62.5 percent, followed by cars and buses, according to a police report.

"Speeding is the major cause of road accidents," the report said. The police have raised 31.37 million Nepali rupees (221,182 U.S. dollars) in fines from the traffic rules violators during the period. Road accidents are common in the South Asain country that claim thousands of lives and leave scores of others injured annually.
