Rare summer sighting of little flamingo in Kuwait
The little flamingo in Kuwait...a rare sighting during the summer

KUWAIT CITY, July 20: A rare sighting of a little flamingo in Kuwait during the summer was captured by local photographer Abdulmajeed Al-Shatti on Saturday. The presence of this small flamingo, uncommon in the country during this season, may indicate moderate temperatures ahead. However, it remains uncertain whether the bird will stay in Kuwait until next March.

Flamingos are among the most striking birds in Kuwait, with the greater flamingo being the dominant species. The greater flamingo typically measures about 1.5 meters in length and is characterized by its white and red plumage, pink beak, and black tips. In contrast, the lesser flamingo is smaller, reaching up to one meter, with a pink body and a dark brown beak.

As mid-summer approaches, migratory seabirds like flamingos begin to return to Kuwait. Historically, small numbers of these birds have been observed in late July and early August. The flamingos remain in the country until late March, feeding on the abundant small marine creatures found in Kuwait Bay.

This rare summer sighting adds to the ongoing observations of Kuwait’s diverse birdlife and highlights the ecological significance of the region’s coastal habitats.
