KUWAIT CITY, Apr 11: Kuwait University continued its free fall in the QS World University Index rankings, as it fell from the level of 801 – 1000 in the year 2021 to the level of 1001 – 1200 in the year 2022. This indicates a deep crisis that forces the concerned authorities to move quickly, given the negative repercussions of the deterioration of the higher education sector, reports Al-Rai daily.

In 2012, Kuwait University was ranked at the level of 500-700 worldwide. It maintained this level until the year 2019, after which it fell to the level of 801-1000. This continued until the year 2021, after which it then recorded the lowest level in ten years to reach the level of 1001-1200 in this year’s classification of the QS World University Ranking Index.

Dr. Imad Khorshid, a faculty member in the College of Engineering and Petroleum who is interested in the university’s classification, expressed his regret at this drop in the world rankings of universities.

He said, “This was expected for Kuwait University, as nothing has changed since the 2017 classification. It is the same data that is being presented each time, and so we do not expect new results”.

Dr. Khorshid explained that the reasons are diverse, the most prominent of which are the leadership vacuum in the university, the lack of support for scientific research, the transition to Shaddadiya without fully furnishing the laboratories, and other reasons. The university requires very great attention. The leadership vacuum is unacceptable, as the majority of leaders in the university are in acting capacity.

He expressed his lack of surprise at the “continuing decline in the university’s classification”.

Dr.Khorshid said, “It is unreasonable that a budget of KD 60 million was allocated to furnish laboratories in Shadadiya three years ago. There are approximately 300 laboratories of which only two or three are furnished. The capacity of the College of Engineering and Petroleum is 1,100 students but only 350 are accepted. So how can the classification improve under such circumstances?”.
