KUWAIT CITY, Sept 17: Minister of Health Dr. Ahmad Al-Awadhi on Wednesday affirmed that patient safety is the foundation of all healthcare services and that quality of care remains a constant, unwavering standard. Speaking at a Ministry of Health event marking World Patient Safety Day, Dr. Al-Awadhi emphasized that human health is a trust entrusted to everyone and an inalienable right that cannot tolerate negligence or delay.

This year’s World Patient Safety Day, observed on September 17 under the theme "Safe Care for Every Newborn and Every Child," focuses on one of the most vulnerable groups in healthcare. The Minister highlighted reports from the World Health Organization confirming that strengthening safety systems and quality of care has saved millions of lives over the past two decades, demonstrating the direct health benefits of investing in patient safety programs.

Dr. Al-Awadhi explained that the Ministry is marking the day with an integrated plan comprising qualitative initiatives and clear performance guidelines. He noted that the Safety Star Award, now in its eleventh year, serves as an incentive to recognize excellence in patient safety.

He pointed out that Kuwait has been a pioneer in adopting quality and patient safety programs since the early 2000s, establishing a specialized department for quality and accreditation and enhancing safety systems across public and private health facilities. Kuwait also contributed to developing the international "Nine Safety Solutions" alongside global experts and implemented the Pharmacovigilance Program to ensure the safety of medicines and biological products. Additionally, healthcare personnel are required to complete specialized cardiac resuscitation courses and continuous medical training.

Dr. Al-Awadhi stressed that the Medical Professions Law No. 70 of 2020 is designed to protect the rights of patients and healthcare practitioners, ensuring comprehensive and safe healthcare in line with the latest international standards.

The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ongoing quality improvement programs and thanked all healthcare workers for their dedication to fostering a culture of safety and enhancing service quality.

The event also featured the honoring of winners of the 2025 Safety Star Award, distinguished committees from the Policies and Procedures Program in Primary Care, and outstanding quality nurses.
