PARIS, July 13: France's prison authorities have launched an investigation after a 20-year-old inmate escaped by hiding inside his cellmate’s luggage as the latter was leaving the facility upon completing his sentence.
The escape occurred on Friday at Corbas Prison, located near Lyon in southeastern France, according to a report by BFMTV.
In a statement to the Associated Press, the prison service confirmed that the man had been serving multiple sentences. “He took advantage of his cellmate’s release by concealing himself in the luggage and exiting the prison,” the statement explained.
A source familiar with the case told AFP that the escaped inmate was also being investigated in connection with organized crime.
Both an internal inquiry and a separate investigation by the Lyon public prosecutor’s office are now underway.
