ROME, Dec 17: Pope Francis is urging the establishment of an international treaty to ensure the ethical development and use of artificial intelligence (AI). In his annual message for the World Day of Peace, the Pope emphasized the risks associated with AI lacking human values such as compassion, mercy, morality, and forgiveness.

The call comes amid a global push for binding regulations on AI, with the European Union recently securing provisional approval for comprehensive AI rules. Pope Francis voiced concerns about AI in the armaments sector and called for human oversight of Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS). He emphasized the importance of preventing automated systems from determining human rights and values. (AP)
