TOKYO, June 5, (Xinhua): The number of stalking cases in Japan in which police intervened reached a record high of 1,341 in 2024, rising by 260 cases, or 24.1 percent, from the previous year, according to data released Thursday by the National Police Agency (NPA). The number of restraining orders issued under Japan's anti-stalking law also surged 23 percent to 2,415, marking the first time the figure has surpassed 2,000.
Of these, approximately 60 percent were emergency orders issued to protect victims in imminent danger. Meanwhile, the number of consultations with police regarding stalking incidents remained largely unchanged at 19,567 cases.
In 233 instances, police took action against individuals who violated restraining orders. Notably, repeat offenders accounted for around 8 percent of all stalking cases in which police intervened, the NPA reported.
