KUWAIT CITY, Jan 3: Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) member states are overwhelmingly favoring Kuwaiti candidate Haitham Al-Ghais to serve as the cartel’s new secretary general in August, the country’s oil minister said on Monday. “It delights me to relay the good news to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al- Sabah,” Dr. Mohammad Al-Fares said in a statement.
Citing a meeting that ended a short while ago, Al-Fares, who doubles as state minister for electricity and water, said the Kuwaiti candidate has received “support across the board” to fill the position of secretary general in August, added the statement. The minister attributed this milestone to the diligent work of state bodies across Kuwait, adding that OPEC firmly believes in the “capabilities and competence” of the Kuwaiti candidate. (KUNA)
