NEW YORK, April 9: In a bold prediction, Elon Musk, the renowned entrepreneur behind Tesla, X, and SpaceX, anticipates that artificial intelligence (AI) will outstrip human intelligence by the end of next year. During an interview on X with Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norges Bank Investment Management, Musk projected that within five years, AI capabilities will surpass those of all humans.
Musk's forecast for AI advancement exceeds previous estimates, including his own, which had anticipated achieving "full" artificial general intelligence (AGI) by 2029. His bullish stance on AGI, AI systems capable of outperforming individuals in any domain, underscores his unwavering confidence in technological progress.
Despite some of Musk's past predictions, like self-driving Teslas and landing rockets on Mars, remaining unfulfilled, recent AI breakthroughs, such as advanced chatbots and video generation tools, have accelerated the pace of AI development beyond expectations.
However, Musk acknowledges that AI progress faces challenges, particularly due to supply bottlenecks in microchips, notably those produced by Nvidia. While these constraints are gradually easing, new models are now testing other data center equipment and straining the electricity grid.
Musk's enthusiasm for AI contrasts with his previous calls for caution in advanced AI development, citing risks to society and humanity. Last year, he advocated for a halt in training AI systems more powerful than OpenAI's GPT-4. Nonetheless, Musk revealed that his own AI startup, xAI, is actively developing advanced models, with plans for a successor to GPT-4.
In recent years, Musk has intensified efforts in the AI space, shifting focus and resources towards xAI. He aims to secure billions of dollars in funding to compete with OpenAI, reflecting his commitment to advancing AI despite past disputes with former collaborators.
Musk's pivotal role in AI development has been marked by controversies, including his departure from OpenAI in 2018 and subsequent legal action against the company and its CEO, Sam Altman. Despite these challenges, Musk remains at the forefront of AI innovation, driving forward the boundaries of technological progress.
