‘Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port to play key role in international trade’

Kuwait wins category (C) membership in IMO

LONDON, Nov 30, (KUNA): Undersecretary of Kuwait’s Ministry of Communications Kholoud Al-Shehab said Friday Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port is one of the mega projects in the country’s national development plan that will have a great impact on international trade routes.

“The port, with 24 harbors, will serve as a major route for regional shipping and transit services,” she said in a statement delivered on behalf of Kuwait to the 31st General Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The port is designed to link the sea to the mainland through a network of highways and railways, thus serving as a critical juncture in the international Silk Road between the East and the West, Engr Shehab noted. On Kuwait’s role in the IMO, she said her country joined the organization as early as in 1960 only one year after the IMO held its maiden meeting.

“Kuwait, having one of the biggest fleets in the world, takes part actively in the various programs of this UN specialized agency out of keenness on ensuring the safety of shipping and preventing marine pollution,” she added. Earlier today, the IMO General Assembly elected Kuwait as one of the 20 category (C) members of the organization’s council. Meanwhile, the 31st General Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) elected on Friday the State of Kuwait, among other countries, for membership in category (C) of the organization’s council. At the conclusion of the assembly meetings, Kuwait’s Kholoud Al-Shehab told KUNA that she was very pleased and proud to have the State of Kuwait represented in IMO council members for the next two years.

IMO category (C) are 20 states that are not elected under (A) or (B) categories, but have special interests in maritime transport or navigation and whose election to the Council will ensure the representation of all major geographic areas of the world.

The countries that are also elected includes Bahamas, Belgium, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey. Al-Shehab added the Kuwaiti seat won due to the vote of 112 countries, which refl ects the respect and appreciation that Kuwait enjoys in international forums, pointing out “Kuwait can now participate in decision-making through its membership in the executive body of the Maritime Organization.” Al-Shehab expressed her sincere thanks and appreciation to the representatives of GCC, Arab, and friendly countries that supported and voted for Kuwait in the elections. She also expressed thanks to His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Minister of Commerce and Industry and Minister of State for Services Affairs Khaled Al-Roudhan for extending all support to the success of Kuwait’s participation in the conference. Al-Shehab appreciated the support of the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry and the participation of Kuwait’s Ambassador to the UK Khaled Al-Duwaisan through mobilizing the votes that enabled Kuwait to win. The executive body of the Organization, which is responsible for overseeing the work of the Organization, is composed of 40 Member States elected by the Assembly for one regular session elected in three categories.
