‘Move to install smart meters in final stages’ – ‘Treated water used for irrigation clean’

KUWAIT CITY, May 29: The Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) is currently putting the final touches on a plan to replace the old meters with smart meters, which will lead to the operation of the centralized system that consists of 1.2 million smart meters within seven years towards the implementation of the new water and electricity charges.
Sources revealed the plan includes the development, administration and operation of smart meters and the communication network through a telecommunication company registered in the Central Agency for Information Technology (CAIT).
Sources said the winning company will install the systems, programs and applications in the headquarters of the ministry in South Surrah to be ready for operation. Sources explained the ministry set the conditions for executing the plan; such that the systems, programs, applications and licenses will cover 1.2 million smart meters, as well as support the future development and expansion works for a period of 84 months or seven years in various sectors — commercial, investment, private, industry, government and agriculture. Sources added the smart meters will be installed in residential, industrial and commercial areas.
Meanwhile, in another development, Assistant Undersecretary for Sewage Engineering at the Ministry of Public Works Engineer Waleed Al-Ghanim affirmed that the sector is currently using about one million cubic meters of treated water daily for irrigation, reports Al-Jarida daily.
He declared the water is treated through various procedures in different technical stations and 350,000 cubic meters out of one million cubic meters is quatrain water shared among the farms in Abdali and Wafra areas for varieties of farming produce.
He added this type of water is highly clean and that about 650,000 cubic meters of triplicate water is distributed among birds’ protective areas, in addition to various horticultural plants along the roadsides and highways countrywide.
He indicated Kuwait has succeeded in taking the lead, as regards its sewage system, which is exemplified in the varieties of plants on the roads irrigated with triplicate treated water. He stressed that strengthening infrastructural services in Kuwait is the main desire of the Sewage Engineering Sector and the ministry at large.
