LOS ANGELES, Nov 28, (Agencies): A missing child with autism was successfully located over the weekend, thanks to the GPS bracelet he was wearing. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Tampa, Florida, provided an update on Monday, revealing that a search for the 9-year-old with autism commenced just before 6 pm on Sunday.

Utilizing the SafetyNet program, which utilizes GPS-equipped bracelets, the HCSO’s SafetyNet team successfully located the child. The Facebook post from the sheriff’s office stated, “With the invaluable assistance of SafetyNet — a program utilizing GPS-equipped bracelets — HCSO’s SafetyNet team was able to find the child, hiding behind a building’s A/C unit, safe and unharmed.”

In body camera footage shared by the sheriff’s office, two team members approached the back area of a home in Ruskin. The second deputy spotted the child crouched behind the house’s air conditioning system, and with a reassuring tone, said, “Oh hey, buddy! Here ya go!” The child, holding the hand of the deputy who found him, emerged and left with the two uniformed officials.

The 9-year-old was located approximately 0.02 miles away from home. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed pride in the deputies’ responsiveness and expertise, stating, “I am incredibly proud of our deputies’ responsiveness and expertise that were instrumental in this successful recovery operation.”
