SPAIN, Oct 9: Nearly 500 tourists were evacuated after a fire broke out at the Melia Costa Atlantis Hotel in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, last night. During the evacuation, a 23-year-old guest died after jumping from a third-floor balcony to escape the blaze.
Local authorities confirmed that emergency services received the first call just after 9 p.m., reporting the fire at the hotel on Venezuela Avenue. Firefighters, police, and ambulance teams quickly responded, beginning the evacuation of the 490 guests, including several British tourists, who were seen standing outside the hotel as firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.
The fire is believed to have started when a mattress caught fire in one of the rooms. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. Authorities confirmed the fire was brought under control and no other injuries were reported.
The victim’s nationality has not been disclosed, and the circumstances surrounding his fall are still being examined. The hotel has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
Most guests were unharmed and allowed to return to their rooms shortly after the evacuation order was lifted.
This incident follows a recent fire in Birmingham, England, where around 200 people were evacuated from a tower block, highlighting ongoing fire safety concerns in hotels and residential buildings.
