DETROIT, Aug 6: In a disturbing incident on Detroit’s east side, a man struck a bicyclist with his car while recording a video on his phone and then posted the footage to Instagram. Police do not believe the incident was accidental.

"I think they have no conscience and don't care," said Randall Cousins, a fellow bicyclist.

The victim was hit off Edgewood near Isham last Thursday morning. The impact was so severe that the bicyclist was knocked off his bike and out of his shoes, which were still at the scene on Monday. According to police, the victim suffered broken legs.

After hitting the bicyclist, the driver struck another car, though this was not captured on video, and sped away. Detroit Police Commander John Svec of the seventh precinct commented on the unusual nature of the incident, suggesting it was done for social media attention rather than any discernible motive.

"I've seen people hit by a car, but there's usually some kind of motive. This one appears to be just for social media," said Svec.

Police have investigated whether this incident could be part of a dangerous TikTok trend, but neighboring police agencies have not reported similar occurrences. Svec described it as an isolated incident.

The suspect has since wiped his social media accounts, but the Detroit Police Department has obtained warrants to search these accounts. "He's not gonna get away with it," Svec assured.

Cousins, who frequently rides along the same route where the victim was struck, expressed concern about safety in the area. He noted that the route is particularly hazardous for cyclists due to frequent close calls with vehicles.

"I ride right around here every day," Cousins said. "Over here, for some reason they speed, don't care, honk their horn, cuss you out. We got rights like them."
