A wise old man says: “If you reach over seventy without waking up to pain each morning, it’s a sign you’ve reached your time!”

Undoubtedly, good health is a crown only truly appreciated by those who are unwell, and the value of wealth is immeasurable. However, few truly value this wealth, as the majority adopt the mindset of “seize the moment” without concern for what the future holds.

This perspective holds true for many, and it may be worth considering, provided there is someone to ensure that indulgence in distractions and the pursuit of life’s “pleasures” do not culminate in a bedridden state at life’s end.

Picture oneself lying on a bed, reliant on plastic tubes to regulate the intake of food and manage bodily fluids and waste, unable to move, anticipating a slow and inevitable death. In such a vulnerable state, one may regret not reflecting on the happy memories, the delightful hours of passion, and the pleasures of life to bring solace amid the pain, suffering, and the looming fear of a daunting demise.

The years passed quickly, and I was approaching the last “fifth” of them, after spending in this life nearly 30 thousand days and nights, during which I saw a lot, and every day, for at least thirty years, I discovered the extent of my helplessness and ignorance, my inability and my short-sightedness.

I now have little time to learn more, write more, enjoy my life more, travel more, make those around me happy more, understand more, and succeed in keeping my memory alive and vibrant, for life is memory, and if it fades or dies, it dies. The body after that, even if its owner remains alive for many years!

I lost a lot of family, friends, and relatives, some of whom were like scorpions, and yet each of them had a role in my life, whether negative or positive, and I will definitely join them one day, and perhaps someone will come after that who will write about me and remember me, and in both cases I will not be there to care or to comment on what was said about me.

So we have to enjoy our time, or what is left of it, learning something new, whether a skill, cooking, reading a book, every week, or even learning a new hobby.

Let us smile at the little things in life, which make you hear a beautiful ringing in the heart, and let us continue to enjoy the days we have left in this world, and do what we have always dreamed of doing, for there is no time to postpone the beautiful things.

For those whom we do not continue to ask about or visit, whether family or loved ones, we will be surprised, the next morning, that they have left us or departed from us … perhaps forever! We will regret that we did not kiss them or bid them farewell, or even end our differences with some of them, or apologize, even to those of them who had wronged us … some day!

Note: Thank you to my colleague Adnan Al-Othman. I want to reassure him that my Spanish is improving, and it will not be long before I will be able to use it to order lunch in a beautiful Andolothian village restaurant.
