KUWAIT CITY, Sept 16: According to Bassam Al-Shammari, an expert in domestic labor affairs, the coming period will witness the announcement of the opening of the door to recruiting domestic workers from new East Asian countries, led by Bangladesh, in the implementation of the directives of the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Talal Al-Khaled on the need to open cooperation frameworks to recruit expatriate workers in the private and domestic sectors from new countries in order to fill the major shortage in the market, especially for professional and technical workers, reports Aljarida daily.

He explained that coinciding with the end of the summer vacation and the start of the new school year, the need for Kuwaiti and expatriate families to seek the services of domestic workers increases. However, the current numbers in the market are not sufficient to meet the needs of these families.

Al-Shammari called on the relevant government agencies, led by the Public Authority for Manpower (PAM) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to accelerate the pace of signing memorandums of understanding with new countries for recruitment of domestic workers so that the current shortage can be filled and the absence of Filipino workers can be compensated.

He said, “There are several complaints being filed continuously by families about the low quality of the current domestic workers, amid the continuation of the decision to stop issuing visas for new Filipino workers, especially due to the language barrier and the lack of proficiency of most expatriate workers in the English language, which increases the chances of non-adaptation and refusal to work.” Al-Shammari stressed that opening new recruitment markets creates a balance in the market, solves labor shortage problems, and reduces recruitment costs in a way that does not burden the citizens and residents.
