Kuwaiti Cabinet Discusses Drug Smuggling Prevention, Gulf Cup Preparations, and Road Repairs

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 15: During their weekly meeting on Tuesday, the Kuwaiti Cabinet discussed various national issues, including efforts to prevent drug smuggling, preparations for the upcoming Gulf Cup tournament, and plans to repair roads ahead of the winter season.

The meeting, held at Bayan Palace, was chaired by Acting Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah. Following the session, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Sharida Al-Mousherji provided an update on the discussions.

The ministers were briefed on communications received by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah from leaders of friendly and neighboring countries, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation in various sectors.

They were also informed about the official delegation accompanying His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, representing the Amir at the first joint GCC-EU Summit in Belgium. The Kuwaiti delegation includes Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya and officials from the Prime Minister's Diwan.

Sheikh Fahad also updated the Cabinet on his recent visit to Bahrain, aimed at strengthening relations and enhancing collaboration in various fields. He met with Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, and other high-ranking officials.

The ministers were briefed on efforts by the anti-narcotics division and the coast guards to thwart an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of drugs into Kuwait via the sea. The acting prime minister also expressed condolences over the martyrdom of Flight Lieutenant Mohammad Mahmoud Abdul-Rasoul, a pilot who died in an F-18 crash during a training exercise.

Minister of Information, Culture, and Youth Affairs Abdurrahman Al-Mutairi, who also chairs the Gulf Football Tournament Steering Committee, presented the Cabinet with updates on preparations for the championship, set to take place from December 21, 2024, to January 3, 2025. He confirmed that a contract had been signed with a specialized company that helped organize the Qatar 2022 World Cup, focusing on gate systems, e-ticketing, and crowd management.

Minister of Public Works Dr. Nora Al-Mashaan reported that 18 contracts had been signed for road repairs and improvements across the country, ahead of the winter season.

Additionally, Dr. Issam Al-Rubaiaan, head of the Civil Service Commission, proposed introducing nighttime working hours in the public sector to alleviate traffic congestion and provide more convenience for citizens.

Finally, the Cabinet reviewed recommendations from the ministerial committee for economic affairs on the annual report from the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority (KDIPA), which highlighted investments in sectors such as IT, oil and gas, infrastructure, energy, health, and education. The ministers praised the efforts of KDIPA's Director General Dr. Meshaal Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and his team.  (KUNA)
