Kuwait voices backing for Yemen

BRUSSELS, Feb 13, (KUNA): Kuwait Thursday reaffirmed its cooperation to support the stability and development in Yemen and to support the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the wartorn country.

The role of the State of Kuwait in supporting the humanitarian situation in Yemen, under the directives of His Highness the Amir of the State of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, is providing urgent and emergency humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of the brotherly Yemeni people, Kuwait’s Ambassador to Belgium, Jasem Al-Budaiwi said in a statement. Al-Budaiwi, also Ambassador to NATO and the EU, noted in a meeting for donors to Yemen that the works of this First Senior Officials’ Meeting on the Humanitarian Situation in Yemen today comes in light of the persistent political and humanitarian circumstances and the serious security challenges that the region and the world are going through. He referred to the efforts of the State of Kuwait to support international political efforts to achieve security and stability in Yemen.

“In 2016 my country, Kuwait, hosted Yemeni peace consultations for more than 100 days to push for a solution. Kuwait continually expresses its willingness to host such consultations in case there is a desire by the Yemeni parties to find a compromise and settle on a political solution,” he said. Kuwait has repeatedly stressed the importance of finding a political solution, as it is the only solution to the Yemeni issue.

“I would also like to point out the importance of the following pillars in achieving a political solution: GCC Initiative, The outcomes of the National Dialogue, Security Council Resolution 2216 and The Stockholm Agreement,” he said. In addition, the State of Kuwait, in 2018, provided logistical support to the Houthis by transferring them to Stockholm so they may participate in peace consultations

“Supporting Yemen is imperative to overcoming the humanitarian crisis whereas Kuwait truly believes that only a political solution will solve this crisis,” he stressed. Al-Budaiwi said Kuwait recently provided $250 million during the United Nations Humanitarian Response Conference that was held in Geneva on Feb 26, 2019.

In addition, $11 million was donated to support the ICRC’s humanitarian response in Yemen, on Sept 28, 2019. He pointed out that Kuwait has also supported the Yemeni people by sending medical teams which are currently conducting field visits in Aden in order to provide health relief and perform surgical operations particularly eye related surgeries.

Kuwait has also opened a medical camp for children with congenital anomalies, and initiated a fleet of mobile medical vehicles, as part of the Kuwait campaign The European Commission has coorganized, with the Swedish government, the meeting on the pressing humanitarian situation in Yemen.

The aim of the meeting is to bring together international donors and aid agencies to discuss measures to improve and address the deteriorating operating environment and working conditions of humanitarian organizations in Yemen, said a European Commission press release. On this occasion, EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, said, “Yemen is the world’s biggest humanitarian crisis. Without secure access to aid, millions of lives are at stake. The parties to the confl ict must uphold International Humanitarian Law and guarantee safe and unimpeded access to humanitarian organizations.”
