Kuwait supports PM Imran’s call for worldwide debt relief move

Financial aid pledged to Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, May 14 : While appreciating Pakistan’s efforts in combating challenges posed by the novel coronavirus (Covid-19), Kuwait extended its support for Prime Minister Imran Khan’s call for global initiative for debt relief for developing countries.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Thursday held a telephone conversation with his Kuwaiti counterpart Sheikh Dr Ahmad Nasir Al- Muhammad Al Sabah.

The Covid-19 pandemic and other issues of mutual interest came under discussion. Dr Ahmad underscored the importance of enhanced bilateral collaboration in the key sectors of health, food security and energy. He further emphasised the importance of long-term strategic vision for Kuwait-Pakistan relations. FM Qureshi lauded the timely and pro-active measures taken by the Kuwaiti government to control the spread of the pandemic. He also briefed Dr Ahmad on the latest situation in Pakistan and the steps taken by the government to contain the virus.

The foreign minister underscored that the pandemic is one of the greatest challenges to confront humanity in the century. While emphasising the importance of the premier’s call for global initiative for debt relief, FM Qureshi underlined the need for closer cooperation to mitigate the impact of the economic slowdown and devote more resources to manage the ongoing crisis.

The foreign minister expressed concerns over threats of increase in the spread of pandemic in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJ&K) due to continuous restrictions on communications and lack of unfettered access to medical services and essential supplies.

He also expressed reservation over the campaign to demonise Indian Muslims in the context of Covid-19.

In this regard, FM Qureshi also lauded the call from Kuwait to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to play its role. He extended an invitation to his counterpart to visit Pakistan. The two sides also agreed to stay closely engaged on all matters of mutual interest.

Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohammad Al Sabah has expressed his country’s resolve to provide all out financial assistance to Pakistan to improve its health sector. He was talking to his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi via video link on Thursday.

The Kuwaiti Minister said his country needs assistance of Pakistan in the fields of food security and health. Ahmad Nasser Al Mohammad Al Sabah gave a proposal to devise a strategic plan of five to ten years to promote cooperation between Pakistan and Kuwait in economic, defence and military sectors.
