Kuwait Reaffirms Six-Month Jail, KD 200,000 Fine For Marine Polluters

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 24: The Environment Public Authority (EPA) has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the country’s marine environment, stressing that strict penalties remain in force against anyone found guilty of intentionally polluting seawater.

In a statement, the EPA cited Article 68 of the Environmental Protection Law, which stipulates that any person who deliberately contaminates marine areas with harmful substances — regardless of their source, cause, or quantity — will face imprisonment of up to six months, a fine of up to KD 200,000, or both.

Prohibited pollutants include oil and its byproducts, toxic liquids and waste, untreated sewage, chemicals, radioactive materials, and harmful forms of energy.

The authority clarified that these penalties apply to pollution across Kuwait’s internal waters, territorial sea, the adjacent zone, and waters connected to the territorial sea.
