KUWAIT CITY, June 8: Hosts Kuwait finished top of their group undefeated after a 5-1 drubbing of Palestine, with Saudi Arabia trailing in second as both progressed to the semifinals of the 2022 West Asia Football Federation Futsal Championship on Wednesday.

The regional tournament is being held after the sport suffered a four-year halt to global competitive events due to COVID-19 and precedes the AFC Futsal Asian Cup, which Kuwait is also set to host from September 27 to October 8. Abdulaziz Al-Bassam, Abdulrahman Al-Masbahi, Hamad Hayat, Saleh Al-Fadhel and Salman Al-Baijan were all on target to score for the hosts as Mousa Harara added a consolation goal for the away side at Al-Nasar Hall. In their subsequent fixture, Saudi Arabia edged a 3-2 win over Iraq as they climbed to second in Group A with six points, only one point adrift of Kuwait. The winning sides await the results of tomorrow’s Group B matches to determine who they will each encounter in the semifinal. Three sides – Oman and Lebanon (each with four points) as well as Bahrain (two points) – are each vying for first and second place spots in the group. (KUNA)
