KUWAIT CITY, July 30: In a press statement issued Wednesday, Mohammad Al-Sindan, Director of Public Relations and Official Spokesperson for Kuwait Municipality, highlighted the growing danger of waste discarded on beaches and its seepage into marine waters. He warned that such pollution has become a significant threat to fish populations in the Arabian Gulf, severely damaging marine wildlife and coral reefs, and placing numerous aquatic species at risk.
Al-Sindan noted that the municipality’s cleaning teams are working around the clock to maintain the cleanliness of beaches and marine islands. However, he pointed out that the increasing number of beachgoers and fishermen has led to a surge in waste, much of which is carelessly abandoned or thrown into the sea, despite its long-term environmental consequences.
He emphasized the urgent need for cooperation among all relevant stakeholders to protect coral reefs, describing them as a vital national asset and one of the most critical natural resources in Kuwait’s marine ecosystem. Preserving these reefs is essential to ensuring a safe and nurturing habitat for fish and a variety of marine organisms.
Furthermore, Al-Sindan underlined the necessity of establishing a sustainable system to conserve fishery resources. This includes the creation of marine protected areas to support the replenishment of fish stocks and strengthen the overall resilience of the marine environment.
The municipality’s call to action comes amid growing global concern over marine degradation and aligns with broader national efforts to promote environmental sustainability and responsible ecological stewardship.
