KUWAIT CITY, Nov 25: The Kuwaiti Society for Community Development affirmed the Kuwaiti government through the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor is keen to support battered women to help them live a better life, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

The President of the Society, Dr Amar Behbehani, said in a press statement the ministry aspires to open special centers to accommodate, house and protect women battered (by their families). The plan, she said, was stalled due to the lack of a law that would facilitate the establishment of these centers and grant women the right to live outside the home if and when they are exposed to violence.

She added, “As we celebrate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which coincides with the existence of the Law on Protection from Domestic Violence, institutions can map Kuwait’s human progress at the local and international levels.”

She pointed out that the project “Ending Violence Against Women” won the award for the best project for the month of November to support women’s rights against discrimination and violence, presented by the mother organization, Soroptimist, which works in a consultative capacity with the United Nations. She stated that international studies and reports indicated an increase in domestic violence in times of crisis at all levels, and with a phenomenon such as the “Covid-19” pandemic, which closed the doors of homes, disrupted business, and caused an exacerbation of violence methods and expanded the circle of violence around countries
