Kuwait Court Upholds 10-Year Jail for Syrian in Drug Smuggling Case, Acquits Emirati

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 23: The Court of Appeals, headed by Judge Nasr Al-Haid, upheld the 10-year prison sentence with hard labor imposed on a Syrian, while it abstained from punishing an Emirati citizen and suspended the detention of another Syrian who was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison with hard labor for smuggling drugs from the United States of America.

Case files indicate that detectives tracked a suspicious package received by the Syrian, which she took to her apartment. She then sought assistance from her Emirati friend, who brought her a large quantity of small bags intended for packaging. The latter denied having any knowledge of the nature of the materials to be packaged, claiming that she only provided the bags at her friend’s request.
