Jolie on America: 'I love my country, but I don’t recognize it'
Angelina Jolie

SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain, Sept 22: Angelina Jolie, the Academy Award-winning actress and humanitarian, voiced her concerns about the state of freedom and expression in the United States during a press conference at the San Sebastian Film Festival on Sunday. In a poignant reflection on her love for her country, Jolie expressed unease with the current political climate and the erosion of personal freedoms.

"I love my country, but at this time, I don’t recognize my country," Jolie remarked, addressing a question about her fears as both an artist and an American. "These are very, very heavy times we are living in together," she added, calling for a cautious approach to the challenges facing the nation.

The 50-year-old actress, who stars in Couture—a film where she plays a filmmaker named Maxine battling cancer—explained that her worldview is inherently global and interconnected. "My family is international, my friends, my life... My worldview is equal, united, and international," she said. "Anything anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms from anyone, I think, is very dangerous."

Jolie’s candid remarks come at a time when political tensions surrounding free speech and personal expression are at the forefront of public discourse in the U.S. She also urged others to be mindful of the seriousness of the times, stating that they must not speak "casually" about such critical matters.

Earlier in the year, Jolie had spoken about her intention to leave the U.S. once her youngest children, Vivienne and Knox, turn 18. The actress has long expressed a desire to move abroad, primarily to seek privacy and peace for her large family. "I have a house now to raise my children, but sometimes this place can be… that humanity that I found across the world is not what I grew up with here," she explained.

Despite her deep-rooted ties to Los Angeles, where she has lived for many years, Jolie revealed that her stay in the city has largely been dictated by her custody arrangement with ex-husband Brad Pitt. "I grew up here, but I will leave as soon as they’re 18," Jolie told The Hollywood Reporter last year. She further elaborated that she plans to spend significant time in Cambodia, where she has strong family connections, and travel frequently to visit family members around the world.

Sources close to the actress have indicated that her move may be sooner than expected. A source told People magazine that Jolie is preparing to sell her Los Angeles home and relocate abroad once Knox and Vivienne reach adulthood next year. "She didn’t have a choice because of the custody arrangement with Brad," the source said. "She plans to relocate as soon as they turn 18 and is eyeing several locations abroad."

The actress and Pitt, who share six children, finalized their divorce in 2022 after a lengthy and highly publicized legal battle. Despite the challenges of their separation, Jolie has made it clear that her priority is ensuring peace and healing for her children. "She’s been trying hard to be light after a dark time," a source close to the family shared with Fox News Digital.

Jolie’s comments in Spain shed light on her broader concerns about freedom, privacy, and the evolving political landscape in the United States, with her personal and professional life increasingly taking on an international focus. As she continues her journey, Jolie remains a vocal advocate for the rights of individuals, both in her personal life and in her public statements.
