IOM chief hails humanitarian role by His Highness the Amir

GENEVA, Jan 22, (KUNA): Director- General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) William Lacy Swing on Friday hailed the international humanitarian role by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah in light of the current serious humanitarian situation worldwide. Speaking at a meeting with Kuwait’s permanent delegate at the UN and International Organizations in Geneva Jamal Al-Ghuneim at the IOM headquarters, Swing voiced optimism at the donors conference due in London next month, saying it will be cochaired by Kuwait, Germany, Britain and Norway.

In this context, he lauded Kuwait’s experience in the fi eld of humanitarian activities and international confi dence in the wisdom and leadership of His Highness the Amir. On his part, Ambassador Al- Ghuneim hailed close relations between Kuwait and the IOM, adding that bilateral cooperation has been expanded over the past three years. He appreciated periodical visits by the IOM chief to the State of Kuwait, pointing to Kuwait’s relentless support to refugees and homeless people worldwide out of religious and humanitarian considerations.

Kuwait and international humanitarian organizations have been making preparations and arrangements for the London donors conference, he added. Meanwhile, Chairman of Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) Dr Hilal Al-Sayer emphasized the important role of media to convey, to the world, Kuwait’s approach and mythology to humanitarianism.

He added media outlets are an essential partner that shed light on philanthropic work carried out not only by KRCS but also other organizations.

Earlier this month, KRCS celebrated its 50th anniversary by launching a photography exhibition that displayed pictures covering years of activities since its establishment in 1966. The exhibition was an effort of publicizing KRCS’ illustrious works and underscoring Kuwait’s fi rm commitment to humanitarian causes. In the meantime, visiting chairman of the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) Dr Hilal Al- Sayer on Friday reiterated support to Lebanon regarding the Syrian refugees in the country.

In a statement to KUNA following talks with Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Samir Mokbel, Al-Sayer said that the KRCS would carry on with their efforts offering aid and relief supplies to the Syrian refugees. He added that the meeting with Mokbel offered an opportunity to review the KRCS projects in Lebanon, as well as the role of all other Kuwaiti institutions to present assistance to refugees there and in other states. Kuwait is the biggest supporter to more than a million of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

Meanwhile, UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL) Philippe Lazzarini has commended Kuwait’s support to the refugees. In a statement to KUNA after a meeting with Al-Sayer, Lazzarini appreciated Kuwait’s response to humanitarian appeals. He pointed out that Kuwait had hosted three international pledging conferences for Syria over the past three years.
