Investigation Uncovers Irregularities in Fast-Tracked Citizenship for Kuwaiti Wives

Government sources stated that the naturalization file is receiving significant attention from the highest levels of government, with each case being meticulously reviewed to ensure no violations or irregularities. One of the more complex areas under scrutiny is the file of Kuwaiti wives who obtained Kuwaiti citizenship. According to statistics, women from 66 different nationalities across the world have been granted Kuwaiti citizenship. While some cases followed proper procedures, others raised concerns due to irregularities in the process, prompting the need for a thorough re-examination.

Sources explained that traditionally, a foreign wife of a Kuwaiti citizen must file a declaration of intent to obtain citizenship, and a waiting period of up to five years must pass before naturalization. However, recent investigations have uncovered significant violations, with some cases showing the period was shortened to less than five days from the time of marriage, bypassing the required declaration process altogether. In certain instances, there was no declaration of intent at all, leading to what the sources described as a "notary-to-nationality" process.

Additionally, some women who were granted exceptions to the waiting period for naturalization later divorced their Kuwaiti husbands and married individuals of their original nationality. There have also been cases where women, after receiving Kuwaiti citizenship, left the country but continued to receive social assistance, transferring funds abroad.

In other instances, women were granted citizenship in record time, only to later divorce and then request that their children from their previous marriages to Kuwaiti men be treated as Kuwaiti nationals. They further sought to have these children naturalized, claiming them as children of a Kuwaiti woman.

The sources highlighted that older cases involving marriages that resulted in children are being reviewed separately, as they are considered different and may require a different approach.

The Supreme Committee for Citizenship Investigation is diligently reviewing the entire naturalization file, ensuring all cases that do not meet the required criteria or show clear violations are being investigated. Appropriate actions will be taken regarding any discovered irregularities.
