KUWAIT CITY, June 9: As temperatures rise and sunlight intensifies during Kuwait’s long summer months, many drivers turn to window tinting for comfort and protection. However, it’s essential to understand the legal boundaries established by the Kuwaiti government regarding vehicle tinting to avoid incurring steep penalties.
What’s Allowed?
Under Ministerial Resolution No. 864 of 2020, the law permits window tinting on all vehicle windows except the front windshield. Drivers are allowed to tint their side and rear windows up to 70%, meaning at least 30% transparency must be maintained. This amendment to Article 46 of the Traffic Law was designed to offer relief from the harsh climate while maintaining visibility and safety standards, and is consistent with broader Gulf regulations.
Front Windshield: Strictly Off-Limits
Tinting the front windshield is strictly prohibited, regardless of the shade's lightness. The restriction is in place to ensure unobstructed visibility for drivers, which is essential for safe road navigation.
Enforcement and Penalties
The General Traffic Department (GTD) strictly monitors compliance with these tinting laws. Vehicles found with illegal tinting, especially on the front windshield, may be impounded on the spot.
Offenders risk facing:
- Fines from 50 KD up to 200 Kuwaiti Dinars, and/or
- Imprisonment for up to two months, particularly for modifying the color or transparency of vehicle glass beyond the legal limit.
