Candy Crush Saga, the widely popular matching game that commuters have been enjoying, has achieved a staggering $20 billion (S$27.4 billion) in revenue since its launch in 2012, as announced by its creator, King. They also revealed plans to release an astounding 15,000 new levels for their most dedicated players.
Originally debuting on a website, the game transitioned to Facebook and eventually found its home on mobile platforms, where it skyrocketed in popularity, accumulating an impressive five billion downloads.
Candy Crush Saga played a pioneering role in popularizing the "freemium" model, wherein the game itself is free, but players have the option to spend money to enhance their performance or can choose to watch ads to earn extra moves.
TjodolfSommestad, President of King, emphasized that Candy Crush Saga, along with their other titles like Farm Heroes Saga, demonstrates the enduring appeal of mobile games. In an interview, he stated, "We've demonstrated to ourselves and the industry that it's possible to rejuvenate games that have been around for years, keeping them relevant for a decade or more, and even setting new records a decade later."
Todd Green, the General Manager of Candy Crush, mentioned that the game receives ongoing updates aimed at enhancing player satisfaction. These updates range from refining the subtle bounce when candies land on the grid to introducing new levels, including the monumental milestone of 15,000 levels.
Candy Crush has held the top-grossing spot in US app stores for the past six years, a testament to the success of King's strategy and a significant challenge for new game developers. Mr. Sommestad acknowledged this by saying, "We do make an effort to develop new games, but the standards are exceptionally high, and launching a new game in today's market is a substantial endeavor. While it took us a few months to create Candy Crush, we continued to invest 10 years in its development afterward."
