NEW DELHI, Dec 14: In its annual report released on December 14, the popular online food delivery app, Swiggy, shared a remarkable story of a Mumbai resident who placed food orders totaling Rs 42.3 lakh in 2023. As the year comes to an end, Swiggy's report, titled 'How India Swiggy’d in 2023', provides insights into the dining preferences of the nation, highlighting Biryani as the most cherished dish ordered through the platform.

The Mumbai resident's staggering food expenditure is likely to capture your attention, with Swiggy stating, "A user from Mumbai placed food orders worth Rs 42.3 lakh (no, that’s not a CTC)," in its report. The recap also sheds light on the popularity of various cuisines and food items, with cakes, gulab jamun, and pizzas securing top spots.

The adoration for Biryani among Indians was unmistakable, as reflected in the compelling statistics presented in the report. Throughout the year, people ordered Biryani at a remarkable rate of 2.5 servings per second. Maintaining its consistent popularity, Biryani secured the top spot on Swiggy's charts for the eighth consecutive year in 2023.

A dedicated Biryani enthusiast from Hyderabad stood out, having ordered an impressive total of 1,633 biryanis over the year, averaging more than four plates each day.

While chicken Biryani remained a top choice, vegetarians made their mark, with one veg Biryani ordered for every 5.5 servings of its chicken counterpart. The Biryani craze reached its pinnacle during the intense India vs Pakistan cricket match when a family from Chandigarh placed a massive order for 70 plates in one go.

Other notable achievements include... A resident of Jhansi created a buzz by placing an incredible order of 269 items in a single day. Additionally, in Bhubaneshwar, a household celebrated with a pizza feast, placing an impressive order of 207 pizzas, showcasing the widespread affection for this cheesy delight.

These noteworthy accomplishments, combined with Bengaluru earning the moniker of 'Cake Capital' for its 8.5 million chocolate cake orders, and the entire country collectively ordering 271 cakes per minute on Valentine's Day, underscore the diverse and indulgent food culture prevalent across India.

Furthermore, the celebration of the International Year of Millets in 2023 made a significant impact, with a remarkable 124% increase in orders for millet-based dishes observed on platforms such as Guiltfree. The health-conscious trend was further evident in a 38% rise in search queries for meals centered around millets.

Hyderabad demonstrated an exceptional love for idlis, with a committed customer spending an astounding 6 lakhs exclusively on this South Indian delicacy.

In another culinary observation, the preference for Japanese anime over K-pop materialized in Japanese cuisine enjoying twice the orders compared to its Korean counterpart. This underscores the dynamic and continually evolving landscape of India's culinary choices.

Swiggy's report provides a culinary snapshot of India's diverse palate, seamlessly blending traditional flavors with modern-day convenience. As we bid farewell to 2023, it's evident that Biryani's legacy continues to add spice to the lives of millions across the country, one delectable spoonful at a time.
