Foot-and-Mouth Disease detected in Kuwait, but meat and dairy ‘safe’

KUWAIT CITY, April 23: Director General of the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) Eng Salem Al-Hai announced the detection of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) after examining some samples in the laboratories of the authority. In a press statement, Al-Hai disclosed that these samples were sent to reference laboratories for confirmation. He reassured the livestock breeders that the authority is working hard and spares no effort in curbing the spread of the disease. He stressed that PAAAFR is harnessing all its capabilities and medical staff to quickly address the issue and expedite procedures for importing the vaccine directly.

He expects the FMD vaccine to arrive early next month; urging breeders to take all the necessary preventative measures to control the disease, boost immunity of susceptible herds, and implement established procedures to ensure the safety of livestock. He cited medical research and reports, indicating “the disease does not affect the health of meat and dairy consumers at all. Meat can be consumed without concern.” He explained that the disease is considered an economic disease that directly affects milk production. “It is a disease that primarily affects cows, but less commonly sheep and goats,” he added.
