KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13, (Xinhua): Flooding displaced over 480 people in Malaysia on Saturday, with the hardest-hit area being the northern Borneo state of Sabah, according to authorities. Sabah, which has seen continuous heavy rains over several days, recorded 420 flood evacuees who were being housed in five flood relief centers.
The neighboring state of Sarawak reported 68 evacuees as of 2 p.m. local time Saturday, according to the country's social welfare department. "I urge residents in high-risk areas to remain vigilant, comply with the instructions of the authorities, and evacuate immediately when directed, as the safety of your family's lives is the top priority," Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said in a statement on Friday.
He added that the authorities and security agencies must continue and step up rescue efforts, ensure that the welfare and basic needs of the victims are met, and provide the best protection until the situation returns to normal. The meteorological department has issued warnings of continuous heavy rains and strong winds.
