Fish prices expected to drop as weather at sea improves

Abide by laws, fishermen cautioned

KUWAIT CITY, March 15: The head of the Kuwaiti Federation of Fishermen, Daher Al-Suwayan, said abundant local fish is expected to be made available in the fish market, especially during the holy month of Ramadan as the weather continues to become warmer – conditions which are favorable for fishermen. A l – S u w a y – an said in a statement to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Monday, that fishing in Kuwait’s territorial waters increases during this time of the year, during which the fish prices drop. He expects the prices of fish such as Nuwaibi, Al-Sha’am and Al-Shim are expected to drop compared to their current prices. Speaking of Zubaidi, he said it is one of the delicacies on the Kuwaiti table and the prices remain steady even if this variety of fish is available in plenty. Meanwhile, Al-Suwayyan has called on the fishermen to abide by the laws and decisions that regulate fishing inside Kuwait’s territorial waters, especially with regard to the seasons that impose a ban on fishing of certain types of fish such as Zubaidi, and shrimp and mullet to help the breeding process so that plenty of fish is available during their season and help support efforts in the area of food security in the country.

He pointed to the availability of Baloul and Hamour, depending on the ability of to hunt these varieties of fish which is expected to be available in plenty in April because of the warm weather. He added the availability of plenty fish at reasonable prices depends on several factors, including the extent of cooperation of the concerned authorities in the fishing sector, given that they have solutions to the problems of fishermen and the food and production sector in general.

Therefore, the union can supply the market with fish and seafood uninterrupted and without delay. He pointed out that the union is responsible for providing food (fish) security by increasing production in various seasons at prices that are accessible to all consumers, citizens and residents. He stressed on the union’s endeavor to overcome the various challenges facing fishermen through coordination and cooperation with the concerned government institutions spearheaded by the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources and other bodies responsible for solving problems and obstacles facing the fishermen in accordance with the laws and in a manner that serves the public interest, (KUNA).
